Aligners vs braces

Same goal. A very different day.

Both straighten teeth. Here's how each one fits into an ordinary day, from breakfast to bedtime.

  1. 7:30

    Breakfast and coffee

    Bigsmile

Pop them out, eat as normal, brush, pop them back in.

    Braces

Stay in. Hard or sticky foods are off the menu.

  2. 11:00

    Meeting, photo or video call

    Bigsmile

Clear trays that most people won't notice.

    Braces

Brackets and wires are on show.

  3. 19:30

    Dinner out

    Bigsmile

Take them out for the meal. Order what you like.

    Braces

Choose carefully, and check your teeth afterwards.

  4. 22:30

    Bedtime routine

    Bigsmile

Brush and floss as usual, rinse the trays, back in.

    Braces

Brushing round brackets and threading floss takes longer.

  5. Overall

    Which cases suit them

    Bigsmile

Mild to moderate crowding, gaps and bite issues. Wear about 22 hours a day.

    Braces

All cases, including complex ones. Nothing to remember to wear.

Living with aligners

Simple daily care

Wear them 22 hours

Only take them out to eat, drink anything but water, and clean your teeth.

Brush before you put them back

Brush and floss after meals, so food isn't trapped against your teeth.

Rinse and clean the trays

Rinse with cool water and clean gently. Hot water can warp them.

Always use your case

Keep them in their case when they're out. Napkins are how aligners get lost.

FAQs

Aligner questions

Can't find your answer? Email smile@bigsmile.co.uk or call 0333 054 1234.

How long does aligner treatment take?

It depends on your teeth. Many treatments take around [X-Y] months. You will know your timeline before you start.

Do aligners hurt?

You may feel some pressure for a day or two with each new stage. This is normal and means they are working.

Will people notice my aligners?

They are thin and clear, so most people won't notice them in everyday life.

Will aligners affect how I speak?

Some people notice a slight lisp for the first few days. It usually settles quickly as you get used to them.

Do I need to wear retainers afterwards?

Yes. Retainers keep your teeth in their new position, and they are included with your aligner plan.
